Dear Carlsbad Municipal Schools Families:

It is with great excitement and anticipation that I welcome you back to another wonderful school year in Carlsbad. With over 300 of our children attending K-3 Plus and gaining an additional 25 instructional days this summer and secondary school students participating in summer school activities, it seems like last school year never ended! This school year, I look forward to increasing the opportunities our children have each and every day in our schools. After completing my first year as the educational leader for Carlsbad Municipal Schools, I am delighted to share some exciting updates with the Carlsbad community:

● We, in partnership with the community, have completed the strategic planning process that began in the fall of 2017. This plan, once fully implemented will fulfill our newly developed district mission to challenge and inspire students to develop the skills and aptitudes necessary to make a living, succeed in post-secondary education, and positively impact their world. Our new vision is, “Excellence Today, Opportunity Tomorrow.”

● The 2018 student achievement data confirm that our school leaders and teachers continue to work to ensure students are meeting the state's standards and providing a quality education for all of our students. Carlsbad students increased their proficiency in all grade levels and subjects except for a slight decrease in Algebra 1. Some grade levels saw as much as a 19% gain in student achievement!

● Our teachers will be engaging in learning every Wednesday in our professional learning communities (PLCs) where they will participate in an ongoing process where they work collaboratively in recurring cycles of collective inquiry and action research to achieve better results for the students they serve.

● The Carlsbad Municipal School District was granted AdvancED School System Accreditation from the AdvancED Accreditation Commission, the national commission that confers the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI), the Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC), and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement (SACS CASI) accreditation seals.

● The Carlsbad Municipal School District was selected from among 150 school systems for participation in a national initiative with the Achievement Net

● We have extended our partnership with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, for 3 more years to support a new K-12 STEM strategy set for implementation in 10 district schools. With Discovery Education’s combination of award-winning digital resources and STEM-focused professional learning, educators in participating CMS schools will soon be creating dynamic learning experiences that improve academic achievement and prepare students for success beyond the classroom.

● Aside from our new website and app available for your mobile device we are implementing an opt-out text messaging system to improve communication. We have recently updated our student information system for better data quality and improved parent communication for grade reporting.

● Our students will have expanded access to technology as we continue to implement the Google G-Suite, including Google Classroom, and 1:1 student access to ChromeBooks at grades 6-12 and 1:1 iPad student access from Kindergarten to grade 5. Our technology integration efforts for students come along with the support for teachers with the addition of a Technology Integration Specialist and Technology Integration Coaches. Students will continue to have access to robotics and STEM afterschool activities through generous community donations.

● We are partnering with the Carlsbad fire and police departments to increase safety and security at our campuses while improving on our safety drill procedures. We will also be updating our visitor management systems at all our campuses to increase vigilance at all our schools. In addition, our technology team is increasing video and security surveillance at our campuses.

● To provide for the best facilities for our children, the Carlsbad Municipal School district will break ground on our newest elementary school this fall and expect a grand opening in January of 2020. Learn more about our newest facility at: https://www.dpsdesign.org/carlsbades3.

● We are welcoming the largest student enrollment in district history with over 6,750 students. After receiving an award for more than $1 million from the New Mexico Public Education Department in addition to $140,000 from the state to start-up the expanded Pre-K program, we are welcoming the youngest of learners into the CMS family.

In closing, I am delighted to be entering my second year serving as your Superintendent of Schools. I join you in providing excellence today for opportunity tomorrow as we work towards creating the finest educational system in the state of New Mexico. As always, I welcome you to visit our schools and learn what makes Carlsbad Municipal Schools a wonderful place to learn and live!

Sincerely,

Dr. Greg Rodríguez
