Carlsbad is experiencing significant growth that is stressing our facilities, instructional programs, and support structures. To alleviate multiple issues Carlsbad Municipal Schools is seeking an $80,000,000 facilities bond.

The bond is aimed at addressing our elementary facilities over five years by renovating and expanding our existing facilities. In its most basic form, we are returning our children to a neighborhood school structure. All children will attend an elementary school with a K-5 class structure.

Phase I calls for the renovation and reopening of Riverside Elementary as a 445 student K-5 School. The addition of kindergarten wings and expansion of current cafeterias at Ocotillo and Desert Willow.

Also Phase I, the district will construct a 1,100-seat performing arts center at the high school to meet performance and school curriculum needs. To address the lack of adequate locker room facilities the district will also construct a mulita-sport locker-room facility and remodel the existing Field House.

Phase II will be the remodeling and renovation of Monterrey and Sunset to make them K-5 schools. Monterrey will have a new gym and cafeteria as well as kindergarten classrooms with a capacity of 470 students. Sunset will be renovated and expanded with a new gym, classroom and library and will be capable of housing 577 students in grades K-5.

Phase III consists of renovating and expanding Hillcrest Elementary into a 603 student K-5 school. Major additions will be a new gym and the kindergarten additions. The District will also renovate the current Early Childhood Education Center. The building will house 304 students in the AM and PM as well as six kindergarten classrooms to accomodate kindergarten enrollment for Cottonwood Elementary.
